Most XP games run fine on Vista. Most use the WOW64 technology.

The second remark concerns x64, of course.

Why not just run the game (or any app, for that matter) in "Compatibility Mode?"

i'm putting the xp games on vista because for one thing the vista solitaire is not working properly on my pc because of the low specs on the pc and the xp games don't need the compatibility mode thing to run "Mark D. VandenBerg" wrote in message

Will any of the games that are released for Windows XP editions be able to be played on the new Windows Vista editions (like The Sims 2)?

Yes, the bulk of games will work on Vista. I've tried a couple of dozen and have only found one that doesn't at the moment.

Games which to use OpenGL libraries WILL NOT play on Vista.
The Vista recognize DirectX games ONLY.
Doom 3, Quake 4, Pray and so on are NOT Vista compatible.

That's hopefully not the case with the final version of Windows Vista.
If so I will not be buying Windows Vista :-(

Oh Really? I was able to play the Prey demo on Vista x64 using the Nvidia 88.61 drivers which ..."Includes OpenGL driver for compatibility testing. "
I think I might install Doom 3 and check it out now....

You probably have to install the game into Vista. You may have copied the Programs file, but you didn't mention whether you transferred all the Registry settings.

What is your system? What is the ver. of Vista? In what mode did you start OpenGL games (Doom 3, Prey etc.). In DirectX? What was the resolution? Performance? How did you turn on support of OpenGL in Vista Beta 2 x32? Is it possible for ATI Radeon x700 Pro? Newest drivers from ati.com do not set up OpenGL libraries into Vista and do not recognize them if they already in. All these OpenGL games playing only in 640x480 DirectX mode or hang up on my machine with Pentium 630 and 2Ggb RAM

Add: (For list of "working" games - at least for me anyway!)
NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED: Black Edition (DVD)
SIN EPISODES: Emergence
F.E.A.R. (Needed taskman to end a few unecessary processes in order to work)
Sorry for repeating F.E.A.R. but I thought the added piece of info might help others! No patches were installed for games! They were installed and played straight out of box! All games were played in the 32-bit ver of Vista.
My PC-Setup:
Mobo: ASUS P5GDC-Deluxe (LGA775, Intel 915P+ICH6R, CPU-Lock Free, FSB-800 O/C'ed) BIOS: AMI ver: 1011 beta-005 CPU: 3.0GHz Intel P4 630 (O/C'ed to 3.6GHz and Vista doesn't seem to mind!) System RAM: 1GB (Generic) Dual DDR2, PC4200 (533MHz - O/C'ed) Video: "Xpert-Vision" GeForce 6600LE (512meg) Sound: Onboard CMI 9880 (Vista seems to have issues with onboard CMI chips but I have this working fine now nonetheless!)
Cheers,

For me after clean installation of Vista it does not find the chipset and thus i get a tray icon that shows i dont have sound. I have not tried to install anything then.
Your help will be appreciated! THanks, Markos.

others say quake iv works fine yes it runs after instlaling v 1.3 but even after going in and setting to smp mode (I have a pentium d 915) it still takes about 10 minutes to start up.. that is unacceptable.. same graphics card as under xp (6600gt) with nvidia latest 9965 vista drivers.. starts up in under a minute
10 minutes is too long to make it playable..

Yes, as others on this board have said but I would like to add that a game that I was having issues with in Windows XP (XIII - it would load level 3) plays without issues in Vista Ultimate.
There are updated drivers for Vista on the nvidia site http://www.nvidia.com

I have 2 games that still won't work after installing the Jan 5 nVidia driver to the RTM version of 32 bit Vista released November 18
NFS Carbon Collector's Edition DVD does NOT work arrggghhhhhh also Star Wars Battlefront II fails, both these games ask for the "correct" DVD and EA will not support Vista at all, don't even bother

Have you seen today's Windows Update deling with compatibility issues on a long line of programs including games?
no. where is it? maybe you can awnser my qusetion. Do games run without disks on vista? if not, how do you get them to do so?
"Hugh Wyn Griffith" wrote:

I found the updates when I ran Windows Update manually and when I got the list, double clicking on one to see the details.
I don't do games so can't help you about your other question. I know that MS Streets & Trips gives the option of keeping the maps on the CD or transferring them to the hard drive but I don't know what games do -- I would think it would affect speed to much to run from a CD or DVD.
Hey all, Dont even think that you are going to run COD United Offensive on VISTA ........NO way no how.....IT loads fine but when you go to multi player it crashes.Single player works,,,,but who wnats to play yourself!

Yes, as others on this board have said but I would like to add that a game that I was having issues with in Windows XP (XIII - it would load level 3) plays without issues in Vista Ultimate.
I offer some suggestions to your other post. Maybe you should go for CoD2 ?

Are you using the drivers that game with Vista ? Is so those default drivers don't support OpenGL. You will need to grab the updated drivers from Nvidia or ATI

Do you know what your video card is? You will have to update its drivers from its manufacturer's web site, the default video drivers in Windows do not fully support Open GL...

Hello, We are having trouble with our Window's Vista. We have recently upgraded our computer to the new Window's Vista, but we cannot play Backgammon, checkers, or any games on the MSN. We didn't have any trouble with XP, but since getting the new computer with the Window's Vista we cannot play any of the games online. We upgraded the Active x, it says all is installed properly. When we are on the MSN, invite one another for a game it will open on both ends, but on our end ther's a little circle that keeps going around and around like it's still connecting but nothing happens further than that. I don't know if anything else is missing or what seems to be the problem. Our computer friend doesn't seem to know what the problem is either, he has uninstalled and reinstalled few programs, still nothing to avail. Please help, we are starting to get frustrated with this new program. I look forward hearing from you shortly, thanks. Solve the Problem before it becomes a problem...

There isn't anything to do to make them play under a 64bit OSes (whether XP or Vista64 or Longhorn server)
I installed Warcraft 3 and Steam (CS, HL2 etc) under Vista 64 with no special effort.
Though in most cases, when you go to install such programs, you'll want to right click on the installer (Setup.exe) and choose the Run As administrator option. Sometimes, you might have to right click on that installer and choose properties and choose Compatibility mode and choose to run as XP:SP2
Outside of that, nothing special.

I lost the ability to play any of my Might and Magic games when I upgraded to Windows Vista. However, I was able to fix all but one by upgrading my video card to a radeon x1300/x1500. I am still having trouble with might and magic IX however which still does not seem to be compatable with Windows Vista at all. (The screen does not refresh between "Loading" screens.) Can anyone offer any suggestions to this problem?

The problem with Might and Magic IX not refreshing after the load screen is a definite bug. Fortunately there is a workaround, do an alt-tab, then alt-tab back into the game and it should come right up.
If you are having problems with the other ones, check my online help page for getting the Might and Magic games working, its at: http://markbsplace.net/tutorials/mminvista/MightAndMagicInVista.htm

Thanks for the tip Mark but this still does not work. Now instead of the loading screen I simply get a black screen with a Might and Magic IX window/border around it. Thanks for trying to help.

Sorry it didn't work. If you come up with a solution let me know and I will post it on the web-page. MMIX does seem to be very display-driver-setting sensitive. You might try turning off all of your 3d settings (i.e. anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering, etc.) and see if that helps.

I saved my saved games to my desktop and reinstalled the game the way you say to at your web site. This time however I did not install the 1.3 patch (only the 1.2 patch.) I also changed my screen resolution to 800 by 600 with 32 bit color. Now the alt+tab trick works. It takes a while (half a minute to three minutes (in one instance,)) but the game so far does manage to get past the loading-screen glitch. I also removed all of the graphic extras provided by the game (tripple-buffering, one pass, shadows, environmental mapping, etc.) but I am so far hesitant to reactivate them. I do not yet know if any of them were interfereing with the loading glitch.
Thanks Mark, at least it is now working thus far.

I am having troubles with the Star Wars Battlefront II game on vista. I installed it and played it once. After that, when i shutdown my computer, it would still start-but when i tried to load a map and actually play-the game would crash to the desktop without an error report. Hey, I have been plating starcraft for a while on Vista, but all of a sudden it tells me there's some error in the middle of the game and shuts it down. Has that happened to you? How can I fix it?

*Problems, on my setup I had to run them into a window first to prevent them from crashing, I'm assuming a video driver bug not letting them pick up resolution details. Others have mentioned lowering the desktop resolution to the same as their default start-up resolution resolves it too.
**Works fine with retail version, but latest patch breaks sound.
***Mouse acceleration seems to be turned on.

The Sims 2 works fine on Vista, aswell any of the expansions.
In the Easy Info for my Sims 2 game it says that my system is unknown and the results says fail. The Easy info also says that there is no display memory and it also fails. Because these 2 things failed i cant run the game on windows vista. Any advice to get it working?
hi, i have c&c first decade, and when i try to install generals to vista 32-bit, it gets to the file: \Data\Movies\GLA06_00s.bik and then a window comes up and says: Feature: Command & Conquer Generals Component: Generals File: E:\data12.cab Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. and then the installation closes.

Dear All, Not long ago, I had to change my pc's HD. After installing my original windows XP PRO, all went well. However, later I found out that the games in c:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone\windows directory will not run any longer. I tried to run backgammon and it pops up a banner saying: "Backgammon is unable to start. Close some other programs and try again, or try reinstalling Backgammon using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel"
1 - I have 2GB of ram and no other apps are running. 2. I tried the Add/Remove programs, and there is NOTHING there to help me re-install it - unless of course I am not looking in the right place.
Any help to fix this will be grrreatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Jago

Yes, the bulk of games will work on Vista. I've tried a couple of dozen and have only found one that doesn't at the moment.
